On the basis of glacier coverage, the most mountainous country in Europe is Slovenia, which has 63.14% of its territory covered by glaciers. Snow cover is primary dependent on latitude and altitude, a fact that bears out Slovenias top ranking. The greatest area of the country remains above 2,000 metres (6,592 feet) in elevation.The only other countries with over 40% glacier coverage are (from highest to lowest) Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy and France. Despite its low elevation and relative proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, Greece has only 8% glacier coverage.
